International Hiring

Wharton’s international students possess invaluable global leadership insight and managerial experience. With their cross-cultural business acumen and multiple language skills, international students at Wharton can contribute to your organization in many ways.

Approximately 40 percent of Wharton students are international, representing over 70 different countries. Many of these students have worked in the United States, while others have significant experience with leading multinational corporations and U.S. companies abroad.

International students hold either an F-1 or a J-1 student visa status while studying in the United States. Students with either of these nonimmigrant visas are permitted to work as summer interns. They can also begin work as full-time employees in the U.S. after obtaining the required authorization.

We have created the Wharton MBA Hiring Guide – International Students to inform hiring managers about the breadth of U.S. visa options and outline the basic procedures, forms and costs involved in hiring a foreign national with a Wharton MBA. Please use this document as a resource for your organization when considering Wharton students and alumni.

Hiring International Students as Summer Interns or Full-Time Employees
Wharton’s International Student and Scholar Services in the Office of International Programs (OIP-ISSS) provides guidance to F-1 and J-1 students on obtaining the appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. The student is responsible for obtaining authorization through the Practical Training option prior to beginning any employment in the United States.

Employers will need to work with international students whom they plan to hire full-time after graduation in order to help sponsor them beyond any authorization obtained through their F-1 or J-1 Practical Training status. Should any questions arise, a qualified immigration lawyer can provide counsel on the options available for the student and employer.

Please refer to the OIP-ISSS website at http://www.upenn.edu/oip/ for information on the student process at Wharton.
